Educators understand and apply knowledge of student growth and development.
How I met this standard in my 491 practicum:
One unit that I did with the Kindergarteners was on friendship and being kind to others. One lesson within this unit was on Bucket Filling: how we can help each other fell happy, loved, and appreciated. I began by reading them Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud.
During the story we discussed what was happening, how people were filling each others’ buckets and what happened when someone was being unkind. After we finished the story and our discussion, the students created their own buckets with one way they could be Bucket Fillers. Over the next few weeks of my practicum I heard the students using this term on their own without prompting. It was amazing to see their understanding of the concept and the social growth within the classroom.
